If we believe our worship is to be God-honoring, then
the music we use for our times of corporate worship
should embody the same quality: focused on who God
is and why He is worthy of our praise. If our
music isn't focused on God and His Son Jesus Christ
- in other words, if it doesn't point us towards His
love and His grace - then all our singing and playing
is in vain.
Beyond
that most important standard I strive to select music
that is theologically sound, singable, and appropriate
to that Sunday's theme. There is no "sanctified"
style of music, so everything from the hymns to pop
to country can be a vehicle with which to enter into
worship. I view the music we use as an imperfect means
of entering into genuine worship, not the end.
It is my hope and desire that we can select music
that will be theologically sound, as well as meaningful
and accessible to those whom God has called us to
minister. While our music must be unapologetically
Christ-focused it must also be meaningful to the believer
as well as to the non-believer. And in order
for it to be meaningful it must be understood and
owned - at its core the gospel message is a simple
yet profound one, and so our music alike must be accessible/singable
yet theologically sound/profound. This is no
doubt a difficult task, but one worth accepting if
we are committed to designing worship services that
will usher the church into the presence of God.
On
your right you will see links to several pages that
answer some common questions about worship music as
well as information about the songs we use at Gold
Canyon. It is my hope that these pages will
open doors of understanding.
